PHOENIXVILLE – Every day drivers pass through the streets of Phoenixville on their way to a new downtown restaurant or Bridge Street boutique without a second thought about the layers of history etched into each edifice. On Thursday, visitors and locals alike will have the opportunity to learn about one of downtown Phoenixville’s oldest avenues when the Phoenixville Historical Society does their walking tour, “Churches of Church Street,” here.

As summer heats up across the nation, Americans prepare for their favorite summer holiday with fresh tanks of propane, coolers stocked with cold ones and lawns acupunctured by American flags. And no one takes the Fourth of July more seriously than Philadelphia — the City of Brotherly Love is devoting an entire week to celebrating our nation’s 231st birthday.

VALLEY FORGE – The anteroom of the Washington Memorial Chapel bubbled with the chatter of a dozen cheerful women wearing brilliant red dresses last Saturday. These alumnae of Delta Sigma Theta, a sorority for African American women, came to support their sister, Dr. Marion Lane, as she and her father, John James Lane, became the first African American members of The Society of the Descendants of Washington’s Army at Valley Forge.

Nearly two years ago, the nation watched, paralyzed, as Hurricane Katrina ravaged the Gulf Coast, leaving lasting damage to towns and cities across seven states. On June 24, parishioners from St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Phoenixville will fly to Bay St. Louis, Miss., where they will join Camp Coast Care, an Episcopal mission group, to give relief to the shoreline city.

Time to break out your bathing suits and swimmies — the Spring City pool will be holding a Free Swim event from noon to 4 p.m. today. There will be games and crafts for children, and visitors can choose to swim in three different pools: a wading pool, an intermediate pool (varies from 2.5 feet to 3.5 feet) and a large pool that runs from 3 feet to 10 feet with a low diving board.
